Just like Garage Band, iMovie has many powerful features available if you look a little closer. Here are some tutorials to get you started. It’s a good idea to think of software as a tool, sometimes even an old screwdriver, or a cheap pen can have it’s uses, you never know when that piece of software may have just the look or sound you are after?

Garage Band

Garage Band comes as part of the Apple iLife ’08 standard package and ships with all new Macs. It is far from just a fun programme to mess around with though. If you look a little deeper you will see there are many exciting features only available on much more expensive software applications.
Here are a few links to some software tutorials to get you going and get you thinking about audio possibilities. Things like the wii remote offer some fascinating new ways of making music.

Final Cut Express

Apple’s Final Cut Express will be the main editing software used on the course. “The first choice of professional editors worldwide, Final Cut Pro 6 delivers high-performance digital nonlinear editing, native support for virtually any video format, and facility-class extensibility and interoperability. Its workflow extends through the other Final Cut Studio applications for even more power.”

Quicktime Pro

A really useful yet inexpensive tool for Video and Sound is Apple’s Quicktime Pro. A more professional version of Quicktime player, Pro offers a large number of video codecs and the ability to export video and sound for a range of uses and formats. If you need to resize a movie, export with a different codec or produce a pod cast or movie for a mobile phone this is a very versatile piece of software. You can find a copy on every iMac in the studio.

In this unit we will be using some of the basic Apple software tools – iMovie, Garage Band and IDVD. You can find some excellent tutorials to get you started on the Apple site. Click on the image below.

Although the iLife software may seem a bit basic if you have edited video or composed your own soundtracks before there are a number of new features that you may find extremely useful. These include publishing directly to youtube, producing content for the new iPhone, producing Pod Casts and much more. Don’t dismiss it until you have had a good look at the latest features.
